Digital Photography Consumer Guides and Catalogs

The following sites serve two masters. They present information about digital photography but also promote the purchase of such equipment. Be cautious with the information you receive from these sites. It appears to be quite helpful. Thanks to the member of the Digital Imaging SIG of the Chicago Computer Society for recommending these sites.

Theatre in Chicago

What's happening in Chicago theatre? Find out at ChicagoPlays.com. The site covers more than just plays. It also explores music and dance performances. Whether the show is at Goodman or at Columbia College, opening and closings are listed. Performance times and ticket prices are available for all listed programs. Auditions and theatre jobs are also available.

Movie Trailers

If you like movies and have the bandwidth, then the AOL Movie Trailer Archive is for you. Hundreds, maybe thousands, of movie trailers are available at this site. See different versions of trailers--long/short, American/International. List seems to be up to date but also has older films.

Pick, Pick, Pick

We've all spotted them. Microphones drop into a scene of a movie. The word "disco" is used in a movie that's supposed to take place before 1970. That's what you'll find at Nitpickers. Movie bloopers and technical errors. Of course that never happens with any of the films produced by Columbia students.

Jobs in the Arts

There are a number of web sites posting jobs in the arts. They cover a wide range of fields and here are a few of them. Most sites listed here are those presented by students in various class assignments. A thank you to all of you.

4 Entertainment Jobs "goal is to provide a cost effective and easy to use site for job seekers and for employers to be able to locate experienced and qualified talent at all levels."

Actor's Equity Casting Call "is a web-based search engine of Equity job notices. Accessible through Equity's public web site, the application allows members to search for and display details of theatrical job notices by a variety of methods."

ChicagoActors.com bills itself as Chicago's Source for Talent.

Entertainment Careers.net is a "Entertainment Jobs, Internships and Career Information in the Entertainment Industry."

Experience. Not just for the arts but another source of career and job information.

Interior Design Jobs is "the Advertising vehicle of choice to reach the best and brightest talent, in the Interior Design Industry."

Playbill: Castings & Jobs Listings. This is the online version of Playbill. This section of the site contains job postings and casting calls.

ShowBiz Jobs. This site allows you to look for jobs by category, region, industry and even company.

Wet Feet is not necessarily just for the arts but it does contain postings and advice in many different areas. It also posts internships.

10 X 10 Photos

Imagine a grid with 100 photos spliced together in a 10 x 10 grid. Each photo has a single word associated with it. That's 10 x 10. Every hour the photos and words change. The images and words come from various new sources. Just as the Google News home page has no human intervention in its creation, neither does 10 x 10. A series of analytical word tests are applied to the news services and the words and photos are drawn from them. The pictures are presented stitched together much as a "contact"(?) sheet might have thumbnails. Individual images can be enlarged with links to the articles they came from. An interesting experiment in photojournalism.

Artificial Life

That's the name of the company. If you're into computer animation, artificial intelligence, virtual technology or smart bots, Artificial Life , Inc. is worth a visit. The company started in Boston but now has its global headquarters in Hong Kong. If this is an area you think you might be interested in the site will provide you with a brief education. It's easy to get into the animated files but don't forget to check out their current projects and areas of development. There is also a small little link in the upper right-hand corner for career opportunities. You want to take a look at that one.

Live! From New York! It's ...

On October 11, 1975, the face of Saturday night television and comedy, as we knew it, changed forever, when an non-celebrity comedy writer by the name of Chevy Chase took his first pratt fall and made that historic introduction that continues to introduce Saturday Night Live (SNL) nearly thirty years later.

Now Saturday Night Live Transcripts brings makes those monologues and comedy routines available on demand. While the transcripts are not 100% complete there is more than enough to keep the average person busy laughing for a good long time. Whether it's the George Carlin monologue from the opening show, or the "Martha Stewart in Prison" Weekend Update last month. This is the source for SNL junkies and those that just want to renew acquaintances with the likes of Gilda Radner and James Belushi.

Enchanted Highway

Traveling near Regent, North Dakota, take I-94 to Exit 72. About 20 miles east of Dickinson you'll discover the Enchanted Highway. In the 32 miles to the south of Regent you will find 6 sculptures at various points along the way. They are the work of teacher and school principal, Gary Greff. The artist welds these huge sculptures (some are over 100 feet tall) and places them along the Highway. They range from the cartoonish Tin Family to more traditional themes such as Geese in Flight. My favorites are: Geese in Flight, Grasshopper (60 ft. tall) Delight, and Theodore Roosevelt Rides Again. If you can't get there in person, visit the web site.

What Color is Your Parachute?

This site has nothing to do with parachutes or career choices. It is a personality profile test based upon your color preferences. Colour & I (British site you suspect), presents you with line drawing of various images and several virtual cans of paint. You then determine what color you would choose for that item. After several of these decisions, it presents you with a personality profile. I have no idea how scientific this site is but it's one more approach to an old problem. "Who Am I?"
