History of Costume

You can now view the complete History of Costume book by Braun & Schneider. It covers the fashions from 1860-1880. The original book had 125 pages with four pictures per page for a total of 500 pictures. An excellent resource for theatre and film people needing help with costumes design for such plays/movies as The King and I, The Seagull, and other shows surrounded by the Victorian period of history.

SIBMAS: International Directory of Performing Arts Collections and Institutions

The SIBMAS International Directory of Performing Arts Collections and Institutions lists over 7000 international institutions with material relating to the performing arts (theatre, opera, music, ballet, film, circus, radio, television, cabaret, pantomime).

For anyone involved in the performing arts this site should definitely be in your favorites list. While it uses an index list (drill down) method of searching you can search by Institution, Collection, or Location. When you find the collection or institution you're looking for you're presented with vital information such as address, email, web site, etc. The Columbia library is listed as well as the Columbia Center For Black Music Research.

PDN Photo Annual Awards

The PDN Photo Annual Awards are given each year for the best photos in 8 categories. Advertising, Magazine/Editorial, Photo Books, Photojournalism/Sports, Corporate Design, Personal Work, Web sites, Student Work. Not only can you see some of the best photography of today, but you can also see the state of our culture as expressed through these amazing photos. You also have an opportunity to vote for your favorite. As I understand it your vote will count when it comes to deciding the winners of the awards.

Masters of the Cinema

Masters of the Cinema covers much more than Hollywood. It covers the globe. The site attempts to keep the reader abreast of the latest in world cinema. Especially dates of new DVD releases of films by the masters. I don't think you'll find too many films written or directed by comedians or action hero movies here. This focuses on works by directors such as: Breeson, Dreyer, Cassavetes, Bruñuel. For the serious film student.

Students in fashion design or theatre might find Bissonnette On Fashion useful. It contains photos of clothing from the 18th - 20th century. It also contains clothing from various geographical areas as well. There's a nice mix. While it doesn't try to display everything, what it does show is worth viewing.

Reel Classics

Reel Classics covers movie "classics." It has info specific to actors, films, music from the "classics." Also an extensive sound and video collection.

Pigments Through The Ages

Pigments in Painting is a site for artists if ever there was one. It contains a history of pigment. How it developed from charcoal drawings to the current day with information about artists and how they use pigments to design their own color. It should be fascinating for someone really into painting and the arts.

Photography Related Directory

All Things Photo is a searchable subject index of photo sites. It includes exhibits, documentary, history, stock, and organizations. Photography students might find this interesting.

New York Times Movie Review

Along with providing information about current movies, the New York Times Movie Review also contains the archives of movie reviews from the last 20 years.
